The same objection is raised below against the empirical psychology of §378. Rational psychology regards the mind as a static ‘thing’ rather than ‘pure activity’.

The ‘harmonious interconnexion’ (harmonische Zusammenhang) is something that the empirical psychologist expects each mind to achieve for itself, not something that the psychologist hopes to achieve in his own theory. In this respect it is analogous to the ‘perfection’ that followers of Leibniz, in particular Wolff, urged us to strive for. If the mind were simply a bundle of independent forces, it could never achieve such integration. In Hegel’s view, by contrast, the mind has an ‘original unity’, the ‘concept of mind’ itself, and this particularizes itself in a ‘necessary and rational’ way, not into a bundle of forces, but into a rationally articulated structure.
How does it differ from philosophy? Earlier (cf. §381, nn. 16, 17) Hegel’s answer was that the other is overcome only ‘externally’. Now the answer is that ﬁnite mind is ‘one-sided’: the Idea apprehends itself in the form either of subjectivity (concept) or of objectivity (actuality), but not both together. ). The former absorbs external objects into the mind, while the latter projects the mind or the will into the external world: cf. §443, n. 3. Hegel’s point would then be that absolute mind gives equal weight to these two ‘moments’ or aspects: it combines theory and practice, proceeding both from world to mind and from mind to world.
