How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents (1991) by Julia Alvarez: The author relates her wonderful bildungsroman backwards, relaying the haunting story of four sisters who fled the Dominican Republic and eventually forged lives for themselves in America. Fun Home tells the story of the author’s adolescence which was spent in the family’s funeral home. But, if I had the choice between reading a classic in text format versus a comics format, depending on what it is, I’d choose the graphics format.

Glamorama definitely needs to be on this list (along with the other Easton Ellis book, American Psycho) because of the gut churning violence depicted throughout the entire second half of the novel. Comics Worth Reading is another blog worth checking out.
