Hyphenated figure callouts refer to figures in the textbook. As mentioned earlier, mate lo- cation probably depends on chemotactic responses. It is similar to most insect “ears” in comprising a tympanic membrane backed by a tracheal air space. A key to the living species was given by Yager and Humphries (1996). The simplified preliminary key includes only the crane fly larvae belonging to the subfamily Tipulinae. Subsequently, gametogenic tissue appears on the surface of the manubrium, beneath the radial canals, or on the general subumbrellar surface.

The standard feeding behavior of reef-dwelling synaptids is to anchor about 1/3 of the body into some secure hole, and then extend the anterior 2/3 of the body to feed (they can do the water balloon trick with only part of their body if they want to). Their possi- ble metameric condition has led to many controversies about their affinities with other taxa. Figure 20.25 Various arrangements of radular teeth. As the entoderm hollows as the archenteron, a stomodeal in- vagination forms at the site of the blastopore and a proc- todeal invagination produces the hindgut. The jaws are set at roughly 120-degree angles to one another so that the cutting edges form a Y- shaped incision. The reader is cautioned that other classi- fication schemes exist for the taxa within the classes treated here. In addition, when Martinson and coworkers fed Chrysomela confluens larvae to ants, the larvae that had eaten resprouts survived longer than the larvae that had eaten normal sprouts.

Discovery of Pogonophora in warm shallow waters of the Florida shelf. The external opening of the poro- cyte canal is called an ostium or incurrent pore. To burrow, bivalves rely on muscle action to squeeze the shells closed, which puts pressure on the blood sinuses in the visceral mass (body) and moves blood into the foot, causing it to extend. In these forms, fertilization is internal, fol- lowed by brooding or by the production of floating or attached egg capsules.

They are owned by Milwaukee County and are held in trust for the current and future generations. Production of fecal pellets by the marine sponge Halichondria panicea Pallas, 1766. Most grow on open rock or occasionally sand/mud sur- faces, where they are obviously exposed to potential predation. If attracted by these cues, the female responds by slowly approaching the male and sending out sig- nals of her own in the form of particular leg movements.

The gut is U-shaped, beginning with a buccal tube from which arises a buccal diverticulum of various forms and complexities. The only nonarthropod invertebrates that have received much attention in this regard are certain leeches, which apparently are drawn to warm-blooded hosts by some heat-sensing mechanism. The mouth leads to a buccal tube, which is housed within the collar and gives rise anterodorsally to the forwardly projecting buccal diverticulum.
